Position Description

Administratively reporting to the Events & Program Manager and functionally reporting to the Head Chef & Nutritional Program Coordinator, the Sous Chef plays a key role in supporting the overall food service operations at the KCA Youth & Family Wellness Camp. This position requires creativity and passion in the kitchen, with a clear understanding of the camp’s vision of promoting health, wellness, and culture through food. The Sous Chef assists with daily kitchen operations, ensuring meals are prepared and presented to a high standard. Responsibilities also include maintaining cleanliness, supporting food and nutrition programming, and contributing to community gardening and harvesting efforts. Strong organizational and communication skills, a passion for cooking, an interest in gardening, and the ability to support program facilitation are essential for this role.

Reports to:                       Events & Program Manager, KCA Youth & Family Wellness Camp

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with the KCA Youth & Family Wellness Camp Director, Managers, Coordinators, and other KCA staff to support events, programs, and projects.
  • Support the delivery of nutritional programming at the KCA Youth & Family Wellness Camp and contribute to broader community nutrition initiatives.
  • Assist with daily kitchen operations, including food preparation, presentation, ordering, and maintaining sanitation standards.
  • Ensure all meals are prepared in accordance with the established menu, health regulations, and food safety standards.
  • Coordinate with front-of-house staff to maintain a high level of guest and participant satisfaction.
  • Provide training and mentorship to kitchen staff on proper cooking techniques, food safety protocols, and hygiene practices.
  • Monitor kitchen inventory and assist with ordering and restocking supplies as needed.
  • Work alongside the Head Chef and Nutritional Coordinator to develop seasonal menu items and daily specials.
  • Ensure all kitchen equipment is properly maintained and in good working order.
  • Support and facilitate hands-on programming related to healthy eating, cooking, harvesting, and food literacy.
  • Participate in the planning and preparation of meals for annual seasonal ceremonies and cultural gatherings.
  • Provide support in all areas of kitchen operations as needed.
  • Perform light kitchen duties as assigned, including dishwashing and general housekeeping tasks within the kitchen.
  • Assist in the maintenance of the community garden, including planting, watering, weeding, and harvesting.
  • Provide additional kitchen support during peak programming seasons and when seasonal staff are present.
  • Maintain flexibility with working hours, including evenings and weekends, to meet the needs of camp operations and programming.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Experience in kitchen preparation, cooking, and food handling in a professional or community setting.
  • Demonstrated maturity and a strong commitment to advocating for and supporting First Nations people.
  • Proven ability to work effectively with First Nations communities, as well as with health and social service agencies.
  • Ability to respond calmly, respectfully, and appropriately in high-pressure or emotionally charged situations.
  • Demonstrates role model behavior, reflecting positive cultural values, attitudes, beliefs, and actions.
  • Capable of working both independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Anishinaabe culture and language, with experience working in First Nations communities considered a strong asset.

Position Requirements:

  • Valid driver’s license and vehicle is an asset.
  • Willing to work irregular hours, evenings and weekends as required.
  • Willing to travel (when required) to all Treaty #3 First Nation communities.
  • Current satisfactory criminal reference check with vulnerable sector search.
  • Certificate in Food Handlers
  • Standard First Aid & CPR with AED is an asset.
  • Understanding of the Anishinaabe language (Ojibway) is an asset.
