Position Description

At KCA Youth and Family Wellness Camp, we’re not just a destination—we’re a close-knit community. This summer, we’re gearing up for an extraordinary series of day and overnight camps, inviting youth from surrounding first nation communities, to embark on a journey of growth and fun. With a diverse array of land and water-based adventures to arts, sports, and team building, our camps are designed to foster valuable life skills, boost self-esteem, and cultivate lasting friendships. 

We are on the lookout for one (1) dedicated Kitchen Hands to join our team and help us prepare delicious food, wash dishes and support the growth of our beautiful garden. At KCA Youth and Family Wellness Camp, every day is brimming with excitement and opportunity. As a Summer Kitchen Hand, you’ll be right in the heart of the camp, preparing three incredible meals each day that fuel everyone, working in the garden to support the growth of our vegetable and traditional medicines, as well as ensuring the kitchen meets all health and safety standards. We’re seeking Summer Kitchen Hand who are not only passionate about cooking but also understand and embrace the vision of the KCA Youth and Family Wellness Camp. As Kitchen Hand, you’ll play a pivotal role in daily kitchen operations. Your responsibilities include upholding our high standards in meal preparation, ensuring thorough clean-up afterward, are gardening work. We’re looking for someone with strong organizational and communication skills, a love for crafting delicious meals, gardening know-how, and even some kitchen experience.   • Position Title:                   Summer Kitchen Hand  
  • Location:                            371 Strecker Road, Kenora, Ontario, P9N 4N8  
  • Report To:                         Summer Camp Supervisor, KCA Youth & Family Wellness Camo   

Contract:                             May 5, 2025 – August 22  
Hourly Rate:                        $18.00/Hour (40 per week) + Bonus, $1.00 for every hour worked  
                                                if contract is completed   

Special Considerations: Summer Camp   
                                            (4 Weeks – July) Day Camp   
                                            (2 Weeks, 3 Nights/4 Days – August) Overnight Camp – 12 Hour Shifts  

Positions Available:          1 Positions  

  • YES Program and Professional Develop: 
  • Take part in the YES program training workshops that include the onboarding process 
  • Participate in regular check in and additional professional develop sessions that support internal professional growth  
  • Ensure all job specific training is completed and gain personal confidence to complete summer tasks that are assigned.  
  • Collaboration and Support: 
  • Collaborate with KCA Youth & Family Wellness Camp Director, Managers, Coordinators, Head Chef, Sous Chef, Senior, Junior and Inclusive Camp Counsellor, and other KCA Staff on various projects, events, and programs. 
  •  
    Nutritional Programming Support: 
  • Support nutritional programming at the KCA Youth & Family Wellness Camp and community nutrition initiatives. 
  • Instrumental in the development of the vegetable and medicine garden  


Kitchen Operations Assistance: 

  • Assist in the daily kitchen operations; food prep, presentation, serving, and clean up. 
  • Ensure adherence to menu and health standards in dish preparation. 
  • Coordinate with front-of-house staff to ensure guest satisfaction. 
  • Ensure maintenance of kitchen equipment. 
  •  
    Programming and Garden Maintenance: 
  • Facilitate programming related to healthy eating, cooking, and harvesting. 
  • Participate in planning and preparing annual seasonal ceremonies. 
  • Assist in maintaining the community garden; planting, weeding, watering, & harvesting. 
  •  
    Camp Support: 
  • Support the Day Summer Camp Program (4 Weeks – July) and the Overnight Camp (2 Weeks, 3 Nights/4 Days – August). 
  • Willingness to work flexible hours for the KCA Youth & Family Wellness Camp. 
  •  
    Miscellaneous: 
  • Perform other duties as assigned. 
  • Qualifications: 
  • Kitchen and/or hospitality preparation experience  
  • Demonstrated maturity; strong advocate of First Nation people; 
  • Must have demonstrated ability to work with First Nations  
  • Must demonstrate the ability to respond calmly in emotional situations. 
  • Ability to work independently and in a team setting. 
  • First Aid qualifications (minimum of Emergency First Aid) is an asset or must be willing to obtain certificate prior to commencement of work assignment. 
  • Knowledge of the Anishinaabe culture and language and experience in working in First Nation communities. 
  •  
  • Position Requirements: 
  • Valid driver’s license and vehicle is an asset. 
  • Willing to work irregular hours, evenings and weekends as required. 
  • Willing to travel (when required) to all Treaty #3 First Nation communities. 
  • Current satisfactory criminal reference check with vulnerable sector search. 
  • Certificate in Food Handlers is an asset 
  • Standard First Aid & CPR with AED is an asset.  
  • Understanding of the Anishinaabe language (Ojibway) is an asset.
