Position Description
The Cultural Educator will coordinate and support all aspects of cultural knowledge transfer and planning of programming. The Cultural Educator provides traditional teachings and ceremonies by coordinates access to Elders and Traditional people to meet the needs of the camp, with children, youth and families as the primary audience. The Cultural Educator will work to promote cultural awareness, safety and competency within the Youth and Family Wellness Camp while promoting healing and wellness. The Cultural Educator will work in conjunction with other programs in helping to develop land-based healing programming to service the Youth and Family Wellness Camp
Position Title: Camp Cultural Educator
Department: Youth and Land Based Program
Salary: Per Annum, after successful probationary period
Term: Full time
Location: 371 Strecker Road, Youth and Family Wellness Camp
Reports to: Operations Manager, Land Based Program
Summary of Duties
- Ensuring all cultural protocols of the nine (9) member First Nations are adhered to in the planning and implementation of all programming
- Create culturally appropriate programming for events, school visits, community visits, and cultural days
- Facilitate talking, teaching and healing circles with a priority to services and supports for children, youth and families
- Keep records of activities and lists of participants to ensure accurate reporting
- Provide and/or facilitate training in Anishinaabe ways (traditional cultural teachings and healing methodologies) to program participants and local organizations who rent the property
- Provide and/or facilitate cultural presentations and education to individuals, families and communities and ensure clients are aware of the cultural resources available to maintain their cultural identities and practices
- Develop staff smudge bundles for personal use and use with clients
- Smudge KCA vehicles regularly and ensure each vehicle has appropriate medicines available
- Recruits for and maintains a roster of Anishinaabe healers in the KCA catchment area
- Assist in the planning and preparation of annual seasonal ceremonies
- Lead or participate in traditional or spiritual practices for meetings or cultural activities as required
Qualifications
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with First Nation community members and leadership
- Excellent group facilitation skills
- Demonstrated maturity; strong advocate of First Nation people
- Must have demonstrated ability to work with First Nations as well as health and social service agencies
- Must demonstrate the ability to respond calmly and appropriately in emotional situations
- Ability to work independently and in a team setting
- Excellent skills in the following areas: organization, networking, interpersonal, presentation and communication (written & oral)
- Experience working with and knowledge of Indian Residential School survivors
- Model behavior in a manner that serves as an example of positive cultural values, attitudes, beliefs and actions
- Knowledge of the Anishinaabe culture and language and experience in working in First Nation communities
Position Requirements
- Valid driver’s license and vehicle
- Willing to travel (when required) to any Treaty 3 First Nation communities
- Current satisfactory criminal reference check with vulnerable sector search
- Understanding of the language of the Anishinaabe language (Ojibway) is an asset
