Position Description
Kenora Makwa Patrol is a 24/7 foot and mobile patrol unit providing services in downtown Kenora. Working in groups of at least 2, patrollers are often the first point of contact an individual has when requiring assistance or support. Patrollers provide basic first aid, referrals, make calls, assist with safe walks/escorts or rides, supply water or snacks, wait with people while EMS or police are enroute for further assistance, among other forms of assistance.

Report to: Makwa Patrol Manager
Contract: May 5,2025 to August 22,2025
Salary: $ 17/hr (35 Hrs Week) +End of Summer Bonus ($ 1 /Hour Worked if the contract is successfully completed
Position Available: 1 Position
Duties and Responsibilities :
- Actively patrol designated areas within the City of Kenora to provide a visible presence promoting safety and security for vulnerable populations.
- Serve as a first point of contact for individuals in need, offering support and connection to essential services such as housing, healthcare, and social supports.
- Build and maintain relationships with individuals, organizations, and agencies in the community, fostering trust and mutual respect.
- Operate in alignment with the Scared Teachings, ensuring interactions are culturally safe, respectful, and understanding.
- Identify and respond to community safety concerns, including de-escalating situations and providing immediate assistance when required.
- Maintain accurate and timely records of daily activities, interactions, and referrals.
- Participate in regular team meetings, training sessions, and community outreach initiatives to continuously improve service delivery.
- Collaborate with community partners to strengthen networks of care.
YES Program and Professional Develop:
- Actively take part in the YES program training workshops that include the onboarding process
- Participate in regular check in and additional professional develop sessions that support internal professional growth
- Ensure all job specific training is completed and gain personal confidence to complete summer tasks that are assigned.
Criteria
- Between the ages of 15 to 24
- Be available from Monday to Friday, 9 am to 4 pm
- Be returning to school in September 2025
Qualifications
- Strong understanding of the 7 Grandfather Teachings and demonstrated ability to work in a culturally responsive and sensitive manner.
- Experience working with vulnerable populations, including individuals experiencing homelessness, addiction, or mental health challenges.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to foster trust and rapport with diverse groups of people.
- Ability to remain calm and effective in high-pressure or crisis situations.
- Knowledge of community resources and services available in Kenora and surrounding areas.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to document activities and outcomes accurately.
- A commitment to promoting safety, respect, and understanding within the community.
- Must possess or be willing to obtain certifications in first aid, CPR, and non-violent crisis intervention.
- Valid driver’s license and access to reliable transportation preferred.
Position Requirements:
- Willing to travel when required
- Understanding of the Ojibway language is an asset
