Position Description

The Summer Student – Nursing position provides an opportunity for the nursing student to consolidate the knowledge and skills acquired in their approved nursing education program towards competency in the range and complexity of Registered Nurse (RN) or Practical Nurse (RPN) practice, with the supervision of the RN or RPN.  Services will be provided within the KCA member communities and will work in partnership with other members of the health care team, to provide holistic care to the entire community population.

Salary:                                                   $ 19/hr (35 Hrs Week) +End of Summer Bonus ($ 1 /Hour Worked if the contract is    successfully completed

Duties and Responsibilities :

  • Accountable for providing safe nursing care to patients in accordance with their formal nursing education preparation and competency and is responsible for seeking consultation and guidance 
  • Work closely with other Health Care Providers in the community 
  • Consult with Clients, Primary Care physician /visiting Physicians and Nurse Practitioners on an ongoing basis  
  • Provide referrals to various community programs and supports under supervision from a licensed Registered Nurse 
  • Provide care for clients with a wide range of health issues 
  • Initiate and/or contribute to the development of a care plan 
  • Provide follow up care and consultation for clients 
  • Coordinate services and care with the client 
  • Assess the needs for advanced care and medical directives under supervision of a licensed registered nurse 
  • Complete and document a thorough medication assessment under supervision from a licensed Registered Nurse 
  • Complete scheduling for visiting Physicians and Nurse Practitioners based on assessment data 
  • Review laboratory and diagnostic reports for clients and flag potential concerns for visiting physician and Nurse Practitioners 
  • Provide telephone and in-person triage 
  • Help resolve client concerns 
  • Provide interventions as per medical directives or medical orders, such as; wound care, staple/suture removal, injections, ear syringing, assisting with procedures, specimen collection, (subject to provincial college of nurse’s standards of practice, and education) 
  • Provide education related to healthy living, injury prevention, illness, communicable disease, chronic disease, care and treatments 
  • Identify health trends and research that may affect clients 
  • Provide health education regarding health promotion and prevention 
  • Enter information into the Community Based reporting template, E-SDRT and E-HRTT and any other reporting requirements for programs 
  • Participate in problem solving issues related to program design, delivery, evaluation and client related issues, monitor performance of the program through appropriate audits (policies and procedures and medical directives) and review of operational statistics

Qualifications: 

  • Registered student in accordance with policies and procedures of the education institution at which they are enrolled in an approved nursing education program 
  • Acquired competencies in clinical nursing practice to provide safe, quality nursing care, in a supervised assignment 
  • Ability to work as a member of a team and request guidance and consultation 
  • Accept direction and guidance and constructive feedback. 
  • Understanding of and ability to maintain client and business confidentiality and familiarity with PHIPA 
  • Knowledge of Primary Health Care and Social determinates of health 
  • Knowledge of Anishinaabe culture and the social determinants of health specific to First Nations populations 
  • Experience and understanding of Indigenous cultural issues, the geographical realities and social conditions within northern remote Indigenous communities 
  • Communicate clearly, appropriately, and respectfully with the patient, family, and members of the health care team. 
  • Critical thinking skills including clinical judgment, problem solving, and evaluation skills reflective of level of formal nursing education 
  • Adheres to all applicable clinical documentation requirements per site policies. 
  • Knowledge of Public Health Nursing, particularly with communicable disease control and outbreak management 
  • Knowledge of bi-cultural practice model 
  • Strong computer skills, clinical electronic device use, and electronic documentation 
  • Current CPR/AED with HCP and First aid certification 

Position Requirements: 

  • Willing to travel when required 
  • Understanding of the Ojibway language is an asset
