POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Land-Based Educator plays a vital role at the Youth & Family Wellness Camp, supporting the Camp Program Manager in delivering holistic, land-based learning experiences for children, youth, and families. Rooted in Anishinaabe teachings and traditional knowledge, this position focuses on connecting participants to the land through hands-on activities that promote cultural identity, environmental stewardship, and overall wellness.
Working directly with youth at the Camp, the Land-Based Educator helps foster a deep sense of belonging, respect, and understanding of traditional ways of life. This role requires a balance of practical outdoor skills, cultural sensitivity, and the ability to teach in a supportive, inclusive, and trauma-informed manner.

Department: Youth and Family Wellness Camp
Salary: $60,000-$65,000
Term: Full-Time – 40 hours per week, irregular hours
Location: 371 Strecker Road, Kenora, ON
Reports to: Camp Program Manager
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Program Delivery and Facilitation
- Deliver land-based programming that integrates traditional teachings, seasonal cycles, and environmental stewardship
- Lead youth in hands-on outdoor learning such as, but not limited to; fishing, canoeing, medicine picking, gardening, snowshoeing, trapping, and fire teachings
- Support the Cultural Lead and Elders in ceremony and teachings, ensuring cultural protocols are followed respectfully
- Facilitate safe, engaging, and inclusive learning environments that encourage curiosity and confidence
- Adapt programming to align with participants’ ages, abilities, and cultural backgrounds
Program Development and Planning
- Assist in developing lesson plans, activity outlines, and seasonal schedules for land-based programming
- Work with the Program Manager to integrate land-based learning into broader camp programs (e.g., sports, wellness, equine, education)
- Participate in team meetings to share ideas, feedback, and continuous improvement of land-based curriculum
- Maintain knowledge of local plants, animals, geography, and land-based practices to ensure teachings are place-based and relevant
Cultural and Community Engagement
- Collaborate with Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and community members to support intergenerational learning
- Contribute to the delivery of in community events, feasts, and cultural gatherings to strengthen relationships and promote land-based learning
- Ensure all programming reflects Anishinaabe values, teachings, and the Seven Sacred Teachings
- Serve as a positive role model, fostering respect, humility, and connection to the land among youth
Health, Safety and Maintenance
- Ensure all outdoor activities adhere to safety and risk management procedures
- Assist in maintaining trails, fire pits, canoes, gardens, and outdoor learning areas
- Monitor weather conditions and environmental changes to ensure participant safety
- Report any safety concerns, incidents, or equipment needs to the Program Manager
Documentation and Evaluation
- Record attendance, activities, and participant feedback for program reporting
- Contribute to evaluations and storytelling that highlight participant experiences and program impact
- Support data collection and reflections that strengthen the quality and sustainability of land-based programs
Other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS
- Strong understanding of Anishinaabe culture, traditions, and connection to the land
- Experience leading outdoor, cultural, or educational activities with children and youth
- Knowledge of local ecology, traditional plant use, and land stewardship practices
- Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions and terrain
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with a compassionate and patient teaching style
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment with Elders, youth, and staff
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
- Diploma or equivalent experience in Outdoor Education, Environmental Studies, Indigenous Studies, or related field preferred
- Minimum 2 years of experience delivering land-based or outdoor programs, preferably in a First Nations or community-based setting
- Experience working with Indigenous youth and knowledge of trauma-informed practices is an asset
- Ability to speak or understand Anishinaabemowin is an asset
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
- Valid driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle
- Valid First Aid/CPR and/or Wilderness First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain)
- Clear Vulnerable Sector Criminal Records Check
- Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and overnight trips as required
