Position Description: 

We are seeking one (1) enthusiastic and dedicated Counsellor Supervisor to join the team at the Youth & Family Wellness Camp. This key leadership role is responsible for directly supervising and supporting the Senior and Junior Camp Counsellors, ensuring that all campers experience safe, inclusive, engaging, and culturally grounded programming throughout the summer. The Counsellor Supervisor plays a vital role in supporting staff, addressing day-to-day camper needs, and ensuring that programming aligns with camp values, expectations, and Anishinaabe teachings.

Location: 371 Strecker Road, Kenora, Ontario, P9N 4N8 

Report To: Program Manager, KCA Youth & Family Wellness Camp  

Contract:  May 4, 2026 – August 28, 2026 
Hourly Rate:  $24.00/Hour (40 per week) + End of Summer Bonus; $1.00 for every hour worked 
   if contract is completed

Duties and Responsibilities: 

Be a Role Model of Inspiration: 

  • Arrive punctually each day, ready to set the standard for behavior and engagement. 
  • Fully engage in staff training sessions 
  • Wear the staff uniform, embodying the essence of camp professionalism. 
  • Model engaging and well-planned activities that inspire campers and staff alike. 

Training & Professional Development  
 

  • Participate in YES Program training workshops and onboarding.  
  • Attend regular check-ins and professional development sessions.  
  • Complete all job-specific training and demonstrate confidence in assigned cleaning tasks.  
  • Assist with the design and delivery of staff training, including orientation for summer staff  
  • Provide mentorship and professional development throughout the summer, focusing on teaching skills, communication, and cultural awareness.  

Leadership & Supervision: 
 

  • Provide day-to-day supervision, guidance, and support to all Senior and Junior Camp Counsellors. 
  • Conduct daily check-ins and weekly team meetings to review camper needs, programming updates, and staff concerns. 
  • Support counsellors in creating engaging, inclusive, and culturally connected programming. 
  • Support counsellors in creating inclusive group experiences that foster camper safety and connection. 
  • Supporting the transportation of campers to and from programming locations on site. 
  • Observe counsellor interactions and provide constructive feedback focused on skill development and confidence building. 
  • Fostering positive, collaborative work environment that reflects the Sacred Teachings, the organization’s mission & values.  
  • Maintain clear and professional communication with parents and guardians to share updates, address concerns, and ensure consistent support for each camper’s needs. 
     

Camper Experience & Program Coordination: 
 

  • Oversee daily camper routines, including transitions, evening programming, and group-based activities. 
  • Work with camp staff & counsellors to ensure age-appropriate, inclusive, and culturally respectful experiences. 
  • Support staff & counsellors in planning group time, cabin activities, and team-building opportunities.  
  • Support program set-up and clean-up, ensuring spaces and materials are properly maintained. 
  • Collaborate with the Camp Program Manager to ensure programming integrates land-based, water, recreational, and cultural components.  

Safety & Risk Management: 
 

  • Ensure all counsellor-led activities meet safety protocols and are delivered in a manner that prioritizes camper well-being. 
  • Conduct daily cabin and program area inspections and report safety concerns immediately. 
  • Support counsellors in managing camper behaviors respectfully and consistently, following camp policies and procedures. 
  • Document and report incidents in accordance with camp safety policies. 

Staff Training & Professional Development: 
 

  • Assist with the design and delivery of counsellor orientation and training sessions. 
  • Provide mentorship and professional development throughout the summer, focusing on teaching skills, communication, and cultural awareness. 
  • Model professionalism, positivity, and respect in all interactions with staff and campers. 

Program Quality & Evaluation: 
 

  • Monitor and evaluate counsellors to ensure high-quality, inclusive, and engaging experiences for campers. 
  • Track participation, gather feedback from campers and staff, and contribute to program evaluation reports. 
  • Maintain open communication with the Program Manager and Director to identify successes, challenges, and areas for improvement. 

Cultural Integration: 
 

  • Support counsellors in embedding cultural teachings, language, and values throughout programming. 
  • Collaborate with the Cultural Lead to ensure traditional knowledge and land-based practices are incorporated meaningfully and respectfully. 
  • Promote an environment where campers feel safe to learn, share, and explore their identity. 

Camp Site and Equipment Maintenance: 

  • Conduct regular inventory assessments and communicate supply needs promptly. 
  • Maintain camp spaces and equipment during program hours, ensuring a clean and functional environment. 
  • Report any site issues or equipment malfunctions promptly for swift resolution. 

Other Duties as Assigned: 

  • Collaborate with the Camp Program Manager to ensure programming integrates land-based, water, recreational, and cultural components.  
  • Be flexible and adaptable, ready to support camp operations in any capacity required. 

Qualifications: 

  • Ability to work independently and in a team setting. 
  • Knowledge of the Anishinaabe culture and language and experience in working in an Indigenous community or organization considered an asset. 
  • Experience working with children in a camp environment or similar setting. 
  • Ability to plan, organize, and lead a variety of engaging activities for children of different ages. 
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to interact effectively with campers, parents, and other staff members. 
  • Knowledge of safety procedures and ability to respond to emergency situations. 
  • Physical fitness and ability to participate in camp activities alongside campers. 
  • Flexibility and adaptability to changes in schedule, program, or weather conditions. 
  • Creativity and willingness to bring new ideas and approaches to the camp program. 
  • Must be willing to travel when required. 
  • Vulnerable Sector Criminal Records Search. 
  • First Aid qualifications (minimum of Emergency First Aid) is an asset or must be willing to obtain certificate prior to commencement of work assignment. 
  • High Five Certification is an asset. 

Education and/or Experience

  • College diploma or equivalent community work experience in the following areas:  
  • Community Services (Child and Youth Worker, Recreation and Leisure, Social Service Worker, Early Childhood Educator); Aboriginal specific programs (Community Advocacy, Education, Child and Family Services 
  • Aboriginal Studies, Studies in Traditional Teaching) 
  • Experience in youth programming, camp supervision, or recreation leadership. 
  • Strong knowledge of Anishinaabe culture, language, and teachings; experience working with Indigenous youth an asset. 
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and leadership skills. 
  • Ability to manage multiple staff simultaneously and adapt to dynamic camp environments. 
  • Standard First Aid/CPR certification (or willingness to obtain before start). 
  • Understanding of the Ojibway language is considered an asset
