Position Description:
We’re seeking Seasonal Gardener who is not only passionate about gardening but also understands and embraces the vision of the Youth and Family Wellness Camp. As Seasonal Gardener you’ll play a vital role in all garden duties. Your responsibilities include planning what we will grow, preparing the garden soil, planting, weeding, watering, pruning, harvesting and maintaining the overall health of the gardens. We will also require you to assist with youth-focused garden programming. Position Title: Camp Gardener
Location: 371 Strecker Road, Kenora, Ontario, P9N 4N8
Report To: Summer Camp Supervisor, Youth & Family Wellness Camo
Contract: April 13, 2025 – October 30
Hourly Rate: $21.00/Hour (40 per week) + Bonus, $1.00 for every hour worked
Positions Available: 1 Positions
Duties and Responsibilities:
Be a Role Model of Inspiration:
- Arrive punctually each day, ready to set the standard for behavior and engagement.
- Fully engage in staff training sessions.
- Wear the staff uniform, embodying the essence of camp professionalism.
- Model engaging and well-planned activities that inspire campers and staff alike.
Training & Professional Development:
- Participate in YES Program training workshops and onboarding.
- Attend regular check-ins and professional development sessions.
- Complete all job-specific training and demonstrate confidence in assigned cleaning tasks.
- Assist with the design and delivery of staff training, including orientation for summer staff
- Provide mentorship and professional development throughout the summer, focusing on teaching skills, communication, and cultural awareness.
- Model professionalism, positivity, and respect in all interactions with staff, community members and campers.
Collaboration and Support:
- Collaborate with MWG Youth & Family Wellness Camp Director, Managers, Coordinators, Head Chef, Sous Chef, Senior, Junior and Inclusive Camp Counsellors, and other KCA Staff on various projects, events, and programs.
Programming Support:
- Support with delivering hands-on programming at the MWG Youth & Family Wellness Camp and community nutrition initiatives.
- Instrumental in the development of the vegetable, medicine and flower gardens.
- Encourage youth to build skills in environmental awareness, food literacy and teamwork.
Garden Maintenance:
- Maintaining garden health, identifying pests, planting, weeding, watering, & harvesting.
- Prepare soil and garden beds.
- Maintain tools, equipment and garden structures.
Other Duties as Assigned:
- Willingness to adapt working hours based on needs of program
- Be flexible and adaptable, ready to support camp operations in any capacity required.
Qualifications:
- Experience planning and mapping out a garden, growing fruit and vegetables and harvesting
- Demonstrated maturity; strong advocate of First Nation people
- Must have demonstrated ability to work with First Nations
- Must demonstrate the ability to respond calmly in emotional situations.
- Ability to work independently and in a team setting.
- First Aid qualifications (minimum of Emergency First Aid) is an asset or must be willing to obtain certificate prior to commencement of work assignment.
- Knowledge of the Anishinaabe culture and language and experience in working in First Nation communities.
Position Requirements:
- Valid driver’s license and vehicle is an asset.
- Willing to work irregular hours, evenings and weekends as required.
- Willing to travel (when required) to all Treaty #3 First Nation communities.
- Current satisfactory criminal reference check with vulnerable sector search.
- Certificate in Food Handlers is an asset
- Standard First Aid & CPR with AED is an asset.
- Understanding of the Anishinaabe language (Ojibway) is an asset.

- Valid driver’s license and vehicle;
- Must be willing to travel when required;
- Vulnerable Sector Criminal Records Search.

- Be available for the whole summer
- Identity as Indigenous – Asset: Treaty 3
- Enrolled in Post Secondary – Asset
