Position Description:
Kenora Makwa Patrol is a 24/7 foot and mobile patrol unit providing services in downtown Kenora. Working in groups of at least 2, patrollers are often the first point of contact an individual has when requiring assistance or support. Patrollers provide basic first aid, referrals, make calls, assist with safe walks/escorts or rides, supply water or snacks, wait with people while EMS or police are enroute for further assistance, among other forms of assistance.
Position Title: Summer Student – Kenora Makwa Patrol
Location: 240 Veteran’s Drive, Kenora, Ontario
Term: Contract / Full-Time
May 4, 2026 – August 21, 2026
Report To: Makwa Patrol Manager
Hourly Rate: $17.00/Hour (40/week) + Bonus, $1.00 for every hour worked
if contract is successfully completed

Duties & Responsibilities
Be a Role Model of Inspiration:
- Arrive punctually each day, ready to set the standard for behavior and engagement.
- Fully engage in staff training sessions.
- Wear the staff uniform, embodying the essence of camp professionalism.
- Model engaging and well-planned activities that inspire campers and staff alike.
Training & Professional Development
- Participate in YES Program training workshops and onboarding.
- Attend regular check-ins and professional development sessions.
- Complete all job-specific training and demonstrate confidence in assigned cleaning tasks.
- Assist with the design and delivery of staff training, including orientation for summer staff
- Provide mentorship and professional development throughout the summer, focusing on teaching skills, communication, and cultural awareness.
Patrol
- Actively patrol designated areas within the City of Kenora to provide a visible presence promoting safety and security for vulnerable populations.
- Serve as a first point of contact for individuals in need, offering support and connection to essential services such as housing, healthcare, and social supports.
- Build and maintain relationships with individuals, organizations, and agencies in the community, fostering trust and mutual respect.
- Operate in alignment with the Scared Teachings, ensuring interactions are culturally safe, respectful, and understanding.
- Identify and respond to community safety concerns, including de-escalating situations and providing immediate assistance when required.
- Maintain accurate and timely records of daily activities, interactions, and referrals.
- Participate in regular team meetings, training sessions, and community outreach initiatives to continuously improve service delivery.
- Collaborate with community partners to strengthen networks of care.
Safety & Risk Management
- Prioritize the safety and well-being of client by maintaining supervision.
- Ensure all engagements meet safety protocols and are delivered in a manner that prioritizes everyone’s well-being.
- Conduct inspections and report any concerns immediately to supervisor.
- Document and report incidents in accordance with safety policies.
Criteria
- Between the ages of 15 to 24
- Be available from Monday to Friday, 9 am to 4 pm
- Be returning to school in September 2025
Qualifications
- Strong understanding of the Sacred Teachings and demonstrated ability to work in a culturally responsive and sensitive manner.
- Experience working with vulnerable populations, including individuals experiencing homelessness, addiction, or mental health challenges.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to foster trust and rapport with diverse groups.
- Ability to remain calm and effective in high-pressure or crisis situations.
- Knowledge of community resources and services available in Kenora and surrounding areas.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to document activities and outcomes accurately.
- A commitment to promoting safety, respect, and understanding within the community.
- Possess or be willing to obtain certifications in first aid, CPR, & non-violent crisis intervention.
- Valid driver’s license and access to reliable transportation preferred.
