Position Description

The Communications Coordinator is responsible for the development and execution of internal and external communications that reflect the values, culture, and strategic priorities of Kenora Chiefs Advisory (KCA). Reporting to the Director of Human Resources, this role plays a key function in supporting organizational communication, employee engagement, and public-facing messaging.

The Communications Coordinator leads the creation and management of digital and print content, supports community engagement initiatives, and ensures consistent application of brand standards across all programs and departments. This position also supports Human Resources initiatives through internal communications, recruitment marketing, and organizational storytelling that strengthens KCA’s identity as an employer of choice.

Salary: $70,000 starting (range $70,000-85,000 per annum based on experience, skills)

Term: 1.0 FT Permanent

Location: Kenora, First Nation communities in the surrounding area

Reports to: Director of Human Resources                         

Duties and Responsibilities

Communications Strategy & Organizational Messaging

  • Develop, manage, and execute integrated internal and external communications plans aligned with KCA’s organizational standards and strategic priorities.
  • Support Human Resources initiatives through communications related to recruitment, onboarding, employee engagement, and organizational culture.
  • Ensure alignment between internal culture and external messaging to promote consistency and organizational integrity.
  • Contribute to building a positive organizational culture through storytelling, employee highlights, and wellness-focused communications.
  • Support initiatives that promote KCA as an employer of choice.

Media Relations

  • Draft and coordinate media releases in accordance with established processes, working closely with the Executive Team to obtain approvals and ensure accurate messaging.
  • Act as the primary media contact for Kenora Chiefs Advisory by responding to media inquiries, maintaining relationships with local and regional media outlets, and maintaining an up-to-date list of media contacts.
  • Coordinate media coverage when required to support organizational initiatives, events, and announcements.

Digital Communications & Content Development

  • Lead creation and coordination of print and digital content, including newsletters, social media, program flyers, website updates, and event promotions.
  • Capture and share stories, photos, and videos highlighting employees, programs, services, events, and community impact.
  • Develop engaging, creative, and informative social media posts.
  • Monitor, evaluate, and risk manage the organization’s social media presence.
  • Work with programs to develop social media content.
  • Work in conjunction with information technology staff to manage updates to the KCA website and support implementation of site-specific communication systems when needed.

Brand Management & Organizational Materials

  • Ensure consistent application of KCA’s brand standards across all communications and materials.
  • Review and support development of program and organizational resources to ensure quality, accuracy, and alignment with brand and messaging standards.
  • Coordinate the design and layout of organizational publications, including reports and promotional materials.
  • Lead the development of the Annual Report, including coordination with internal stakeholders and external design vendors.

Community Engagement & Cultural Protocols

  • Support community engagement initiatives by ensuring communications are respectful, culturally appropriate, and aligned with community values.
  • Work closely with cultural advisors, coordinators, and program staff to ensure communications and event coverage follow proper cultural protocols and accurately reflect community perspectives.

Event Coverage

  • Attend events to provide photography and videography coverage.
  • Deliver timely and engaging media content during and following events.
  • Maintain and organize a digital library of photos, videos, and communication assets.

Additional Responsibilities

Qualifications:

  • Excellent writing, editing, and digital storytelling skills
  • Strong organizational, multitasking, and time management skills
  • High degree of professionalism, discretion, and cultural sensitivity
  • Creative, and enjoys engaging and working with others
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, social media platforms, and design software (e.g., Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, or similar)

Education/Experience:

  • Post-secondary education in Communications, or a related field is an asset
  • Experience working in events coordination, communications, marketing and promotion is an asset
  • Experience working with First Nation communities and/or organizations, with knowledge of cultural and wellness practices is an asset
  • Ability to speak Anishinaabemowin is an asset

  • Valid driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle
  • Willingness to travel and work occasional evenings or weekends
  • Clear Vulnerable Sector Criminal Records Check
