Position Description:

Reporting to the Kenora Chiefs Advisory Kenora Makwa Patrol Manager, the Kenora Makwa Patrol Patroller shall provide community safety and well-being services in the City of Kenora. The Kenora Makwa Patrol is a community-based initiative developed to provide a sense of safety, solidarity, and belonging to both its members and the community they serve, whose presence is also intended to reduce criminal activity in the downtown core. This is achieved in a non-violent, non-threatening, non-judgmental and supportive manner via relationship building and reconciliation. The Kenora Makwa Patrol Patroller is part of the Community Health and Cultural Services team at Kenora Chiefs Advisory and will carry out the duties of the position in accordance with KCA policies and guidelines.

Reports to:                          Kenora Makwa Patrol Manager

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Work as part of the Kenora Makwa Patrol team by providing a continuous patrol presence in the downtown area by foot and/or mobile patrols and responding to calls for service within mandate
  • Provide immediate intervention for community safety and well-being within the City of Kenora
  • Accurately record and report service provision
  • Abide by police service protocols in order to provide effective intervention in the safest possible way (training provided)
  • Be capable of responding effectively to Kenora’s vulnerable population and any person who may need community safety and/or wellness intervention.
  • Provide information and education to the public regarding the Kenora Makwa Patrol and Kenora Chiefs Advisory Mission Statements and mandates.
  • Additional duties as required

Qualifications:

  • Ability to effectively interact with vulnerable populations and the public
  • Excellent written, oral, interpersonal and computer skills
  • Knowledge of the community an asset
  • Experience with Community safety and theory will be considered an asset
  • Ability to work effectively as a team member and be able to take direction well
  • Ability to do physical activity, for example, to walk during the 12 hour shifts
  • Knowledge of the Anishinaabe culture and language and experience working with First Nations communities considered an asset
  • Valid CPR certificate considered an asset

Education

  • High School diploma from a recognized institution

Additional Requirements:

  • Valid driver’s license
  • Must be willing to travel when required
  • Several years of community work experience
  • Vulnerable Sector Criminal Records Search
