Position Description

In partnership with the Kenora Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police, reporting to the Kenora Chief’s Advisory, Child & Youth Services Manager, the Youth Mental Health Support Worker shall engage with and support youth who are identified as being at risk through outreach initiatives in the City of Kenora.  Through a mobile outreach model, Mental Health Support Worker will work in partnership with the Kenora OPP Youth Engagement and Mentorship Officer and will work collaboratively with community partners to provide holistic and comprehensive support to youth individually and in groups within the MHA program to help deliver and improve the services offered.

Location:                           240 Veterans Drive, 3rd Floor, Kenora, Ontario

Reports to:                       Director of Mental Health Services

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Identify, engage with, and support youth who are considered to be at risk
  • Plan key interventions for youth who are considered to be at risk that can help them learn new skills, become healthier and to help them decrease risky behaviour
  • Organize and lead activities for youth
  • Liase with community partners to ensure smooth referrals and to build capacity for supporting youth who are considered to be at risk
  • Abide by police service protocols in order to provide effective intervention in the safest possible way (training provided).
  • Provide information and education to children and youth regarding mental illness and addictions.
  • Perform additional functions as required.

Qualifications/Skill Set:

  • Experience in working with and in engaging youth.
  • Creativity and innovative approaches in working with others.
  • Excellent written, oral, interpersonal and computer skills.
  • Knowledge of the Anishinaabe culture and language an asset.
  • Ability to work effectively as a team member and be able to take direction well.
  • Applicants should possess a valid driver’s license/insurance, have a vehicle and be willing to travel.

 Education/Experience:

  • Formal education related to social services or a health field (preferred)
  • Experience working with youth.
  • University degree preferably in Social Work.  College diploma from a recognized post-secondary institution with experience in child services will also be considered.

Position Requirements:

  • Valid driver’s license and vehicle.
  • Must pass a Level 4 Security Clearance (Medical, Psychological, Security, and Financial Assessments and a detailed Character Investigation)
  • Current satisfactory criminal reference check with vulnerable sector search.
  • Understanding of the language of the Anishinaabe language (Ojibway) is an asset.
  • Be able to pass a level 4 OPP security clearance
  • Must be willing to travel when required
