Ogimaawabiitong (Kenora Chiefs Advisory) would like to honour and congratulate Ogichidaa Francis Kavanaugh on his re-election as Grand Chief of the Treaty #3 territory.

The traditional selection process took place at Powwow Island in Wauzhushk Onigum First Nation, and saw community members from across all 28 communities come out to partake in the election, guided by Anishinaabe cultural protocols.

“I am humbled by the trust and support of the citizens of Treaty #3, who have elected me once again as Ogichidaa Grand Chief. Our shared commitment to unity and prosperity will guide us as we work together to build a stronger future for all our communities,” says Ogichidaa Kavanaugh, in a press release shared by Grand Council Treaty #3.

Kavanaugh is now set to serve a historic fourth and third-consecutive term as leader of the Treaty #3 territory – both firsts for the region. He’s the only Grand Chief to serve three terms consecutively after getting elected back in 2016.

Kavanaugh was elected as Grand Chief after serving for many years as Chief of Naotkamwegwanning, his home community, and he had previously served as Treaty #3’s Grand Chief in the 1990s.

Once again, Ogimaawabiitong would like to send a huge congratulations and Miigwetch to Ogichidaa Kavanaugh for his tireless advocacy work to improve the lives of Indigenous people and communities across Treaty #3, including those in northwestern Ontario and eastern Manitoba. We at KCA look forward to continuing our partnership and journeys together.
